Supreme Court Opens Floodgates On Campaign Finance

Today the Supreme Court has overturned federal campaign finance laws in a 5 - 4 ruling, in effect lifting the limits on the amount of money corporations, unions and other groups may contribute to political campaigns. The court sites the right to free speech granted under the first amendment of the US Constitution.

This ruling is clearly flawed since corporations are not subject to the same protection as American citizens are guaranteed through the Bill of Rights. The four opposing Justices are John Paul Stevens, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor.

The notion that the First Amendment dictated [today's ruling] is, in my judgment, profoundly misguided. In the context of election to public office, the distinction between corporate and human speakers is significant. Although they make enormous contributions to our society, corporations are not actually members of it.

Since campaign finance has been increasing at a steady pace, this ruling will surely mean the winning presidential candidate in 2012 will need to raise $1 Billion. If you thought the terrible ads that play on American fears from the past were terrible and overplayed, you haven't seen anything yet.
