It is a condition that one is born with but which you cannot operate for until they are 18 years old. That, for a doctor, is something of a shock. No one could imagine that if your child was born with, say, leukaemia, we would say we must wait until 18 before operating.LEUKAEMIA, HUH? I'm willing to offer you a mulligan on that rationale. Seriously, rethink that one, jackass.
-Dr Iván Mañero, surgeon who carried out the operation.
Gina Serra, president of the Catalan Association of Transsexuals, suggested that an eight-year-old may know they are in the wrong body. (President of a Transsexual Association??? What are her credentials, most authentic looking fake vagina?)
The most interesting part of this rather obserd story would be the footnote on the Guardian page which reads as follows:
This article was amended on Wednesday 13 January 2010 to change the gender of some pronouns referring to the patient in this case.I call on Websters to develop a set of pronouns so that we may remain politically correct in a transsexual world.
