Chen Shui-bain, President of Taiwan 2000-2008, is digging himself deeper in his search for freedom. Mr. Chen is currently serving a life sentence for conspiracy which he is currently appealing, but it appears he almost had an out.
An activist group from San Frisco calling themselves Formosa Nation Legal Strategy Association (FNLSA) has been attempting to convince a court that Taiwan is still rightfully a territory of the conqueror of Japan, the United States. Obviously every court in the nation including the Supreme Court wants nothing to do with this case, which could result in unthinkable consequences with China.
However, Mr. Chen spoke on behalf of the FMLSA, claiming that he took orders from the Americans while he was president of Taiwan. His motivation presumably is that the US would determine that Taiwan was still a US territory, and he would then be relieved of his current prison term.
Instead, Mr. Chen now faces the death penalty for treason.
The ruling party, Kuomintang (KMT), now considers Mr. Chen "the bastard son of Uncle Sam".
